What usually goes wrong
A dead outlet is often a tripped GFCI elsewhere on the circuit, usually in a bathroom, kitchen, garage, porch or on a dock. Press reset on every GFCI you can find and check the panel. If the outlet is still dead, or it is loose, cracked or discolored, it needs repair.
Common jobs include replacing two-prong outlets with grounded or GFCI-protected ones, adding outlets so cords are not strung across rooms, dedicated circuits for freezers, shops or window units, outdoor and dock lighting rated for wet locations, and ceiling fans on boxes made to hold them.
Many Maryland counties and towns require permits for electrical work. Ask the electrician whether your job needs one, who pulls it and whether the inspection is included.
